The numbers matter but the story sells

HVAC Communications founder Andy Slater explains why the raw figures on your data sheets can add up to a compelling story.

In the HVAC industry we are surrounded by numbers. Airflow rates, energy efficiencies, COPs, SEERs, dB levels, the data that defines our products. For engineers and specifiers, this information is essential. But if we stop at the data sheet, we miss a huge opportunity.

Why data is not enough

Data sheets are brilliant for comparison. They tell consultants and contractors that your fan coil unit moves more air, or your chiller runs more efficiently. But data alone rarely makes people care. Buyers are human. Even the most technical audience wants context, how this product solves their problem, how it fits into the bigger picture, how it makes their working day easier.

That is where storytelling comes in.

Storytelling in a technical world

Storytelling in HVAC does not mean jargon or gimmicks. It means shaping your technical content to answer three simple questions:

  1. What is the problem? Set the scene with the challenge your customer faces, whether that is reducing energy costs, meeting compliance or working in tight spaces.
  2. How does your product solve it? Translate the numbers into benefits. A lower dB level is not just quieter; it means a more comfortable working environment. A higher COP is not just efficient; it means lower running costs and a faster return on investment.
  3. Why does it matter now? Link your solution to current issues in the built environment such as Net Zero targets, building safety or occupant wellbeing.
Engineers as storytellers

I have spent much of my career moving between technical and marketing roles. What I have learnt is that engineers often are natural storytellers, but they do not always realise it. When they explain a system to a colleague on site, they rarely reel off numbers. They explain how it works, why it is better and what will happen if it is not installed properly. That is a story.

Our job in communications is to capture that conversation, polish it and put it into a format that makes sense for the audience, whether that is a blog, a CPD, a brochure or a press release.

Turning data into advantage

When you move from data sheet to story you create material that works: case studies that show a building’s journey to compliance, CPDs that help consultants win over clients, marketing campaigns that tie your technical USP to a much bigger narrative around climate, cost or comfort.

The numbers do not disappear; they underpin everything, but they are brought to life. And in a crowded market, that is what makes your brand memorable.

A challenge to the industry

So, my challenge to HVAC manufacturers and suppliers is this: take your next piece of technical content and test it against the three questions above. If it does not answer them, reframe it. Bring the data to life with a story. You will not only stand out in the marketplace, you will also make life easier for the people you want to influence most, the designers, consultants and end users who need to trust your product.

At HVAC Communications, this is what we do every day: use our technical knowledge to tell your stories. Because the truth is simple: the numbers matter but the story sells.
